A DESPERATE bid to save a North Vancouver fishery and up to 300 jobs that go with the business is being backed by both municipal councils. The councils are asking the Royal Bank to take the company, Millerd Fisheries, out of receivership. the bank froze its assets and inventory when Millerd failed to meet a “$1.7 million commitment outstanding on a $2 million” loan. United Fisheries and Allied Workers Union members are anxious to get the company saved before it is forced to permanently close down and in time for the mid-June salmon run. Union members appeared before North Vancouver City and District councils Monday to plead for support — and got it. Both councils agreed to send formal requests to the bank as well as to federal fisheries Minister, Pierre De Bane and _ provincial Economic Development Minister Don Phillips, asking them to do everything they can to save the company. Telegrams sent by the City will ask De Bane to heip the company in any way he can, while Phillips is being requested to apply pressure to the bank and the simple request to the Royal Bank is to give Millerd a chance. In letters to the councils, the UFAWU characterized Millerd as “a well-respected, independent firm employing some 300 shoreworkers, tendermen and fishermen.” during busy It said the company, though soundly managed and economically viable, was unable to meet a commitment on a $2 million debenture, because of high interest rates and the botulism scare in Europe last year that cut sales of canned salmon drastically. The company would be able to take “concrete steps towards an eventual recovery and stabilization,” if it could gear up for the roe herring season, UFAWA WE CARE FOR YOUR ‘VETTE AS MUCH AS YOU DO % RITCHIE we ee SERVICE CENTRE 1525 WELCHNV 987-71 1 1 Re Ye 4 “THE CORVETTE SPECIALIST eae te said, but it is unable to do that because the bank has put it into receivership.
