A7-Sunday News, May 4, 1980 wil x French school serves everyone Dear Editor: I am rushing this in answer to your front page article on “French students getting their own special bus” in last Sunday's paper, to correct the facts and try to repair some of the harm it surely did. Thanks to your anonymous reporter's lavish use of adjectives such as “special”, “exclusive”, “enviable”, etc. he has made us the target of every anti- French person on the North Shore. First and foremost, the Programme Cadre is part of Bigotr Dear Editor: We Canadians look upon the bigotry and discrimination displayed in large areas of the United States with righteous in- dignation. There aren't too many of us who haven't mouthed the words, “it couldn't happen here,” when viewing black men = and women being abused because they are black. the public school system and as such, is open to everyone — it is completely in French, except for English language arts, and the program parallels the English one taught in the schools. Responsibility for registration of little Paul or Jane relies solely on their parents be they French or English speaking. A_ fran- cophone parent is a _ big advantage but cannot be made the only criteria of this program. After all, every Canadian has the right to choose either French or exists We shake our heads in disbelief when we read accounts of whites refusing to sell houses to black people “because it would depress the value of property in the neighbourhood .” We are critical of the segregation still practised in many areas of the U.S. and don't hesitate to vent our feelings when the op- portunity arses. Move Hooker to an island Dear Editor: I am deeply, in fact very deeply, concerned with Hooker and their pollution and worse with the dangerous possibility of even worse or deadly destruction of most of North Shore people. I am a retired electrician, (also very deeply educated in chemical and_ electro- chemical processes) and I worked at Hooker for some months - NOT employed by Hooker but for an electrical contractor working there. I saw many potential dangers, but, in true in- nocence. overlooked it, TV cartoon Dear Editor A recent 25 minute stretch of cartoons at 330 pm had 22 scenes of nolence. The first (wo cartoons featured a cal and two mice with two guns, a knife, two hangings, a bow and arrow, two sword fights, two stabbings, and two beatings There was one scene where the cat was shot from a bow, ncocheted off five travelled through a drain pipe, and crashed onto the ground walls, The third Cartoon showed two blackbuds drop a dog onto a roof, shoot a gun ata man, hit the man with a hammer, and shoot another gun Also shown was an argument: between a male and femaic blackbird, a man believing that a firm of their size would have adequate safety standards and take all precautions (alas for my innocence or I could have raised a public outcry many years ago). Personally, | think Hooker should be moved to an island where the prevailing winds would not endanger anyone, also an island big enough to also relocate any or all Hooker employees for whom houses should be provided by Hooker at a_ reasonable rental. The program will proceed at a set pace and the children must be able to keep up. Children's quick learning abilities have well been proven and young students of average intelligence Should have no_ trouble fitting right in, especially with a transition period built into the program. All children will be welcomed with open arms! Good English schools are numerous and just around the corner for most families — not so in our Case. Cloverley Elementary School offers the only French core program classes on the North Shore: we have to converge students from kindergarten to grade seven to that central point and that is primarily why we asked for a bus in a _ transportation brief we presented to the school board. It should also be made perfectly clear that transportation costs are covered by a provincial grant and not by the school board. The Victoria example was cited wrong: the parent in Canada Well — fellow-Canadians we can get off it. We can Shelve the lypocritical indignation and criticism we are so prone to display.
