Ci4-Sunday News, March 2, 1980 Take your next holiday: when the rest of the office isn’t were my closing words of wisdom last time. Here goes with a calendar of the months and my suggestions. by Barbara McCreadie JANUARY: Any place in the tropic of Cépncorm (below the equator). Costs are high — airfare is at it’s highest, (but if you can live cheaply, it’s a bargain). Check remote villas in South America, Australia and New Zealand. FEBRUARY: The kids have returned to school in the “Southern Cross” parts of the world. Airfare? are stfll high but accommodation is less crowded. Weather should be: superb. APRIL/MARCH: Spring is sprung in Canada, but it’s fall in the South. Temperate temperatures in Argentina and Austraha — and cheaper prices for both airfare and accommodation. Europe is still on low-airfare but the weather may be brisk. Brazil is lovely — hot and uncrowded. The Southern USA is warm but spring-break for kids leads to a lot of bodies fighting for space on rides in Disneyland. Campsites may be very full during the Easter season and/or ‘‘spring break.” MAY: England should be good but the weather can be dicey. The crowds in Europe are slowly gathering. The south of Europe is HOT. Still, it isn't the prime season so you may get away with no’ reservations. JUNE: More crowds in Europe but cheap rates in South America and Australia. If England is going to have nice weather, look to June. Pack a rain- coat, just in case. Airfares are at their highest from now on because the students and summer-holidayers are at their peak. JULY: Unless you're going to the Southern Cross countries, stay home! AUGUST: Every European who can afford a vacation is doing it now. Hawaii is at its cheapest. SEPTEMBER: Europe is at it’s best. Airfares are starting to ease-off. Crowds aren't as bad as mid-summer. Towards the end of the month, took for cold weather in places you'd least expect — such as Rome. Spring is trying to Spring in Australia — and the kids are still in school. This is a great time to try a “farm vacation” in either Australia or New Zealand —-cheap rates and a lot to see. OCTOBER: Hawaii is still a good bet. Try dickering with an owner of a condominium for a reduced rate. The Southern countries are swinging into the start of the tourist season, but just the fringes. Some bargains are possible and airfare is at “shoulder season” which means more than low but less than peak. NOVEMBER: All “easy to reach” hot spots are now at peak. Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean are charging the “earth” from now until April. Of the three, Mexico will probably be the cheapest, depending on airfare. If you have a month to spend, check into prices in the Southern Cross areas. Sometimes the extra airfare will be absorbed by cheaper living. DECEMBER: This is the most expensive month for North Americans to try travel. Since many people don't celebrate’ the Christmas season for reasons of their own, they flock to Hawan, South America and the Cambbean. If you plan to travel in December, I hope you made your reservations yesterday’ OTHERS WATCH: SEASONS TO Lifeguard course in NV The North Vancouver Recreation Centre will be pulting on a National Lifeguard Course for anyone 17 years of age or olde who has taken a Medalhon Award All successful candidates will be quahfied to guard anywhere in Canada Bronze The 40-hour course gets underway today. NORTH VAN. SORIANO SEPTEMBER FINDS EUROPE at its best. Above, cruising down the Danube past Durnstein in the Lower Austrian Danube Valley. MARDI GRAS: In any hot, Catholic area, (such = as Brazil, Colombia, New Orleans or Mexico), plan to book eight months ahead. The same goes for Mardi Gras cruises in South America. They really lay-on a tourist tmp during these tumes and you'll be stuck for a bundle of cash. Great fun if you can afford it. EASTER: Europe is deserted by tourists but many churches and com- Munities stage pagaents. Very interesting for tourists. It can be cold but crowds are minimal. Disneyland and Disney World are a mad- house with everyone who can afford a tour grabbing their kids and setting out. Bookings for Hawaii are hard to get. CHRISTMAS: Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico are full of people who are alone and want to avoid the season, or who don’t celebrate the in the season with families. If you've got a yen to see Christmas lights hung on a palm tree, make your reservations now. : RAMADAM: This is a month of fasting and prayer celebrated in Muslim countries. It is climaxed by the “Moon of Ramadam” where the fast is broken at sundown and the feasting begins. Earlier in the day every family parades around the town in their best outfits. All the kids have new pairs of shoes, and every food stall is stacked with delicacies. Other shops are closed. I’ve seen it three times (twice in Morocco and once in Tunisia).
