If you’re fond of cooking,
you’d probably be very
happy in the kitchen at the
Lions Gate Hospital in North
Vancouver. On a regular day
it produces over 2,200 meals
of all shapes and sizes.

Each member of the staff
of 110 has a specialized job
to do and everyone fits
neatly into a fast, efficient

* routine.

How to
transfer
deductions
to your
spouse

Filing joint income tax
returns by husbands and
wives is becoming more and
more acceptable.

The government now
allows certain deductions to
be transferred from one
spouse to the other
providing they are not fully
used by the _ original
claimant.

Here’s a rundown of the
deductions that are cligible
for transfer:

*Age exemption for people
65 or over;

Interest dividends and

capital gains deduction,
Pension income deduction;

*Deduction for people who
are blind or confined to a
bed o1 wheelchair; .

*Rducation deduction.

To determine bow much is
transferable, you must fill
out Schedule 9 of the income
tax return, Part A is simply a
copy of the spouse's tax
return down to the net in-
come tine. The amount of
chigible dividends — and
pension income is detailed in
the T-1 Taa Guide and must
be included in filling out
Schedule 9

About 20 per cent of all
the meals feed the staff. The
balaiice is sent upstairs via a

small food elevator to
waiting trollies and
distributed among _ the

wards. A total of 646,000
meals are served to patients
each year.

When the hospital goes
shopping for the year, over
$700,000. is spent on raw
food.

These ingredients are then
prepared by the dietary
department staff and turn up
on your tray as chicken-a-la-
king and jello for dessert.

With pressure from
government for cutbacks in
spending, Lions Gate
Hospital must find ways to
convince those with the
money that last year
$2,250,000 was needed to
run the dietary department.
This year the cost will
probably be even higher.
