ad to fix Uni Julie Crawtord Film Reviewer 8 Unbreakable xe % (out of 5). Written, produced and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. M. Night Shyamalan didnt need to use Ins sixth sense to come to this conclusion: if it ain't broke, dow't fix tt. And theretore Unbreakalblr, the director’s much-anticipated follow-up to Last year’s monster hit The Sixth Sense, follows the same pattern: same star (Bruce Willis), same lenswork (dark, gloomy), same kid (well, almost: Spencer Treat Clark is a Haley Joel Osment lookalike), another twist thrown in at the end. The pacing too, is the same. The “action”, such as it is, creeps along with a geriatric gait, with a few pumps of the defibrillator here and there to inject some fife into things. The comparison is inevitable buc unfortunate, because exam- ined on its own merits, Unbreakable has the makings of a better, more developed film. After some statistics about comic book sales and an unusual birth scene in a Philadelphia department store, we are intro- duced to David Dunne (Willis) who's returning home on the train from a job interview. The train crashes, and not only is David the only survivor, he walks away from the twisted | wreckage without a scratch. Soon afterwards, he is contacted by Elijah (Samuel L, Jackson}, owner of a gallery dedicated to comic book art. Elijah has this theory that David sur- vived the wreck for a reason: he’s a superhero but he just doesnt know it yet. , This is big news for David's son (Spencer Treat Clacki buat goes right aver the head of David's wite (Robin Wright Pena. in a small but powerful role), Who just want to put her mar- riage back together. Sure, due to extended hospital stays Eliab’s had wav too much time on his hands te study how lite invitates Marvel Comics art, but it turns out he has a point. David's never been sick a day ia his life. He’s survived several near-fatal accidents. He already protects citizens at his job as a security guard. And he has this uncanny ability to figure out which guy has a gun stuffed in his waistband. : And so, in true “I see bad people” fashion, Elijah helps David cultivate his powers and discern who is in the great- est danger, leading to the film’s lone action sequence. : It sounds corny, but it isn’t. The film does an excellent job of revisiting the superhero genre and presenting hipn as everyman: depressed, crumbling mar- faze, thinning hairline and ali. This guv dosn't jump in and out ofa phonebos to get dressed, and his accepts his “pow- ers” celuctantin, Tecan see the studio executives as plain as dav reading Shyamaian’s seript and savitg “Where's the aise? This one is not nearly as effective as the doozy in The Sixth Sense and feels like it was appended onto the original screenplay. {t ruins what is otherwise a refreshing take on the modern superhero, ene that screams sequel because we want to know what happens next.
