48 — Sunday, June 27, 1999 - North Shore News Salmon stream to be built in Stanley Park VANCOUVER Aquarium Marine Science Centre siaff released 11,600 coho fish fry from the Capilano Hatchery into = Coal Harbour on June 28 at the site of what will become the mouth of the BC Hydro Salmoa Stream in Stanley Park. The BC Hydro salmon stream initiative is a major conservation and education project in Stanley Park, the only project of its kind in Canada. A 300-metre stream is being designed and built by the Vancouver Aquarium and Vancouver Parks Board, with input from BC Hydro staff. Hydro has contributed $1.5 million to fund the salmon stream project — $300,000 each year for five years. The demonstration stream will originate oat the Vancouver Aquarium and wind its way to an area near the Vancouver Rowing Club in Coal Harbour. During the faunch of the BC Hydro salmon. stream project last June, 10,000 coho fry from focal Fisheries and Oceans Canada hatch- eries were released into Coal Harbour. At that time, and again June 18, a pheromone was released into the water to help the salmon find their way back to Stanley Park and their new “home” stream. The scent of the pheromone will guide the fish home ro spawn. Topping the list was Coun. Stella Jo Dean who was given the Heritage Achievement Award in a small ceremony before council's June 21 meeting. “It was Stella Jo Dean's commitment to heritage that made jor such a centennial year,” said Colin Gurnsey, chairman of the Heritage Advisory Commission, in set- ting up the presentation. He noted Pean’s 30 years of public service and winning of the 1996 — Heritage Landscape Award. “We all know how much you cajole ... to preserve her- tage,” Mayer Jack Loucks said in presenting Dean with the plaque.
