42 ~ Sunday. February 22, 1999 — North Shore News Eagles, Saints march on to the BCs Andrew McCredie Sports Reporter andrew@nsnews.com IT seemed only right that the North Shore high school senior boys’ triple-A basketball final should go into overtime. When the buzzer went late Thursday evening, it was the Carson Graham Eagles who clawed out a 78-75 dezision over fivals Sentinel. The two teams, along with the Sutherland Sabres, have fought it our all season for top dog on the North Shore hon- ours. With just one berth in the provincials up for grabs, Thursday night's battle was one for the ages. Tied at 71 after regulation time, the mvo reams traded buckets in the overtime peri- od before Carson Graham's Brent Charleton found him- self on the free throw line with five seconds to play and the Eagles up by one. The Grade 11 forward hit both shots, and the Spartans missed a last second three-pointer to seal the Eagies’ victory and a berth in the B.C. triple-A championships March 9-13 at the PNE Agrodome. Charleton’s clutch heroics, and his 39 points on the scoresheet_ earned him MVP honours. Sentinel star Scott Fraser-Dauphinec had 39 points for the Spartans. “We were in last place at Christmas time so this is a pretty good surprise,” Carson coach Vern Porter said fallow- ing the game. The Eagles dropped just two games since the holiday break. “A number of guys have stepped up since then,” Porter explained, adding that since Sentinel and Sutherland were the favourites all season long, Carson’s trip to Kamloops wasn’t really expected. “Irs all gravy now,” Porter said, “We'll just go to the BCs and play hard and see what happens.” Earlier in the North Shore triple-A tournament, Sentinel defeated Sutherland 75-69, while Carson beat the Sabres 66-60 to set up the champi- onship final pairing. In other early round action, — the Spartans edged Argyle 78-76, Carson downed the Pipers 63- 51 and Sutherland beat Sentinel 91-89.
