~ He's got the grizzled back-couniry beard and
_ the calloused hands.

Walter Buchmuller's also got the oright
aura of a self-reliant outdoorsman.

The Tustic place of skis and
kayaks has been doing busi-
ness on Norgate’s Marine Drive —
strip for the past two decades.

‘Prior to opening his North Vancouver
store, Buchtauller ran Walter's out of a Clyde
’ Avenue garage in West Vancouver for 14
years,

A house came with the garage. fle rented
both for $75 per month.

Hey, those were the days,

Buchmuller now runs Walter's with his
40-year-old son Peter.

The two have carved out a productive
niche in the ski repair and kayak building
trade. Theirs is the only shop of its kind on
the North Shore.

Walter selis his own kayak design, the
Osprey, along with various other brands of
seagoing and whitewater kayaks.

The Buchmullers also restore cances,
many of which are close to firewood when
they arrive and close to lake-bound works of
art when they leave.

_ Walter.has been in the ski business since
he was 13, He studied for a time in Norway
with 1952 Olympic Giant Slalom gold medal-
list Stein Eriksen in the legendary

Norwegian's ski shop.

Skis and the outdoors course through the
Buchmuller veins. A recent iliness has slowed
Walter's outdoors activities somewhat, but. he
remains chronically out and about.

Buchmuller came to Vancouver via
Denmark, Norway and eeland. He and his
wife of 50 years, Elizabeth, were on their
way around the world when they ran into a
slight complication in Vancouver. she gol.
