NOTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL By Bob Mackin Les Sinnott appeared before North Vancouver City council Monday to plead his case. He said he was advised by the city engineer to approach the Recreation Advisery Committee, which already knew of his concerns. “We're dealing with a situation where we're going to have to tum the young people away,” Sinnott said, “The alternatives will be going to parking lots, 7-Eleven. We need to keep the youth active.” Sinnott said there are more than 7,000 girls playing organized soccer on the North Shore, a number which has grown by 20% a year. He said his group is willing to offer some innovative solutions of its own to help create new fields, and that soccer association members may be willing to help maintain and operate fields in conjunction with civic workers. As a last resort, user fees may be acceptable if there is a demonstrable increase in the quanti- ty and quality of fields. Right now, many school fields are unacceptable because of poor maintenance. “User fees are coming, we accept that, as long as they’re not unrea- sonable. We don’t want to wind up with huge burdens.” Moving tribute THE FOLLOWING special “thank-you” appeared in a recent edition of England’s Jersey Evening Post from the secretary of the Jersey Ostomy Society (JOS): “On behalf of the JOS, I would like to congratulate all those involved with the Bowels Open Day recent- ly held in the Endoscopy Unit at General Hospital.” eee Among recent crime targets: A small amount of cash was taken during a break-in at the local CrimeStoppers civic group's office in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
