years it shined the exuberance of
~ youth, creativity and parental toler-
ance forall to see.
When the house finally sold,
each subsequent owner fathered
layer upon layer of thick exterior
. paint overtop the offending cre-
ation, but still il would, over time,
eke through and smile at any who

For me, nothing represents my
heritiwe, my past, my memories of
this place as a child and adolescent
more than the repressed
sunburst on West 23rd.

It typifies a healthy
defiance missing in
youth today that was so
much in evidence in
those days, when
young people fought
the school boird to win
the right for young
women to wear pants to
school.

They were wonder-
ful, simple battles
where we learned to
articulate issucs in a conservative
environment and taste the thrill of
victory when they were forced, by
our common sense and logic, to’lis-

ten to us,

Our young people today,
smarter, more realistic and betler
prepared though they are, don't
know how much they've missed by
having to grow up so fast, so strong
and so serious, :

As I drove by the sunshine
house today, [ smiled yet again as |
recognized the ever-so-faint, round
reappearance of the sunburst.

Eventually the homeowner will
notice too, and another coat of paint
will cover it once again, But it will
always be there, shining through
another cracking coat of paint, a

varm hello to remind me where
I ve been and 4 gentle push to the
next place Vl be.

We're not alone. We just have to
open our eyes and see the sunshine
around us.
