A 20-TON magnet that can turn off pace- makers, empty pockets of metal objects and drain the batteries of nearby cars is coming to North Vancouver this fall. By Bruce Methven Contributing Writer With an anticipated November opening, Capilano Magnetic Resonance Centre wiil offer an option for those patients who require scans for var- fous medical conditions. The private clinic, run by B.C.’s former Socred deputy minister of the environment Richard Dalon, will be open to patients referred by their physicians. “Capilano MRC will make available a much- needed diagnostic tool to a large number of indi- viduals who would otherwise have to go on a wait- ing list or travel to the United States,” Dalon said. The North Shore office will initially be staffed by a radiologist, a radiology technician, a recep- tionist and an administrator. Other staff will be added as the need arises. MRI is frequently used to examine the head, neck and spine areas of patients. The scanner can also provide information on bone, joint and muscle disorders, different types of tumors, multiple scle- rosis, certain heart and blood vessel diseases, and various cancers. In addition to the huge magnet that surrounds the patient, MRI uses radio waves, a computer and a radiologist to interpret the images to a patient’s doctor. Other than a clinic in Richmond operated by former Socred health minister Jim Nielsen, Capilano MRC will be only the second private facility in Greater Vancouver. There are five public MRI facilities in the Lower Mainland including Vancouver General, UBC, Royal Jubilee, St. Paul's and Children's Hospitals. But despite a ministry of health spokesman's assurances that the provincial government is com- mitted to “protecting and preserving a publically funded and universally accessible health care sys- tem,” wailing lists of six to 12 months for MRI facilities are not unusual. For patients with plenty of “time, however, at least their visit to a public MRI facility is covered by the B.C. Medical Services Plan. In the past, patients who travelled to ; Washingtoa state to receive treatment were also covered by their B.C. medical insurance. Since last year, however, when the provitice increased to five the number of MRI facilities in the Lower Mainiand, patients opting to go the U.S. have had to pay their medical bills out of their own pockets, In the U.S. there is one MRI unit for every 96,000 people. In Canada, however, there is just one unit for every 700,000 people. “We support a universal health care system, but we think there are things that are not what we might call basic health care that the private sector has an opportunity to get into that will give people a choice,” Dalon said. Charges for a scan range from $550-1300. Cupilano MRC is associated with Magnetic Resonance Centres of Canada, a wholly Canadian owned company incorporated on Sept. 1, 1992. The company operates the Richmond clinic as well us one in Edmonton.
