30 — Wednesday, May 4, 1994 — Martin Millerchip THEATRE REVIEW %, EEP COVE Stage will 8 be representing the A North Shore at the the Theatre B.C.-sponsored Mainstage ‘94 this year. “ The club swept the major awards at the zone festival held all last week at the attractive Shaw Theatre in Deep Cove and, as a result, will be competing against the best of B.C.’s commu- nity theatre groups at Cranbrook in the first week of July. Theatre B.C. is an umbrella ‘organization for community the- atre groups across the province and besides the annual play festi- val, sponsors a national playwrit- ing competition and workshops in all aspects of theatrecraft. “This: year’s showcase of plays features approximately 80 pro- ductions competing in 10 region- al zones. Each zone is adjudicated by a well-recognized theatre profes- ‘sional,,who besides selecting the regional: winner, also recom- mends productions for special workshopping aswell as recog- nizing individual acting, direct- ing and design talents. While the festival is competi- tive;in the sense that. there aré “Best”. awards, both zone and “provincial festivals are a time of renewing old thespian friend- ‘ships forged in the heat of previ- ‘ous rivalries, In fact, ‘players attend Mainstage finals as an‘annual vacation whether or _ not they are involved in a show. ... Despite the disappointment of ‘not being selected Best Overall Production, members of North Vancouver Community Players, Customer service a concern From page 29 had time to develop the social warmth that is such a big draw for any good Greek restaurant. + [ts customer service needs work, too. . Kostakis’ initial opening, for example, was far from auspi-. cious. Readers reported clisorga- ‘nization and botched reserva- tions. The restaurant also abides by the odd policy of not accepting reservations for two, and on the Friday. night that Table Hopping visited Kostakis, waiting at the door for extended periods even though tables inside were empty. ’ But the instant popularity of the small taverna reflects the appetite of local residents for good neighborhood restaurants. With a little more neighborli- ness, Kostakis could become an enduring Seymour Boulevard dining fixture. many community : patrons were left - North Shore News who plan on attending Cranbrook anyway, immediately offered their help in any capacity to Deep Cove Stage. This sense of camaraderie and shared commitment was much in evidence the night | dropped into zone festival last week. Following the sold-out perfor- mance of three very different one-acts from Howe Sound Players, audience and players mingled over wine and pate in the green room to share their impressions of the evening and the week so far. “It's one of the nicest weeks we've had. There wasn't the sense of this group against that group. Maybe we're all growing old together,” laughed long-time Deep Cove member Ann Booth. Festival chairman Maureen Robinson said as we listened to the excited chatter: “They're just giving the plays a rood cdiagnos- tic.” In fact , the man charged with that ultimate responsibility was adjudicator Michael McLaughlin, GENERAL PAINT BRUSHES & ROLIERS Premium Plus, Premium & Economy % OFF WOOODCRAFT STAIN Solid Colour Oil or Latex, Semi-Transparent Oil or Deck Temporary Price Reduction 296 roup wins competition Artistic Producer of the Nanaimo Festival.
