latest film, Kevin Costner flexes some long-dormant

talent, as he breaks the law (aiong with a few noses)
and kidnaps an eight-year-old ... and that’s. just for openers.

Butch Haynes (Costner) takes a
breather from a 40-year stretch in
the pen for armed robbery, but
unwisely brings along his low-life
cell mate who compiticates their
escape with a hostage taking.

The hostage is an eight-year-old
boy brought up a strict Jehovah's
Witness.

On the dusty back roads,
Haynes loosens up little Phillip

Perry (T.J. Lowther), acting more
like a big brother than his captor.

It's cotton candy, fast rides and a
Casper-the-friendly-ghost costume.

But the joyride has a dark side.
Despite his patience and outer
calm, if he sees a kid getting

‘roughed up, something snaps.

Obviously, a desperately
unhappy childhood and schooling
in state detention have left a few

~ open wounds.

No one knows this better than
Texas Ranger Red Garnett
(Eastwood), Their association goes
back to Butch’s first arrest.

And now not only does Red
have to capture an elusive quarry,
but he gets to deal with snooty FBI

Clint gives one of his patented
steely-eyed, but sympathetic, per-
formances — and no one could
deliver, “Hmm, tater tots. ... 1
like tater tots,” and get as big a
laugh.

But Eastwood's real skill lies
behind the camera, where he can
draw such fine performances out
of his cast and carry the movie in-
to.a very disturbing area.

In what may be the single most
effective scene of his directing ca-
reer, he moves the story from ex-
uberance to terror, brilliantly using
the same haunting Creole music.

A Perfect World isn't perfect but
it is a four de force and ranks as
one of Clint’s best.
