According to Mayor J. Murray Dykeman, the District was one of the first municipalities to recognize the benefits of the newer technology — improved roadway lighting with lower j power costs. “We began our con- version program back in the early 1980s and, when B.C. Hydro’s Power Smart program came along, it provided added incentive to complete our program. Today, District streets are BWER SMART Hghted with more than 950 of the new lamps. Total savings to local taxpayers from this ccnver- sion add up to over $20,000 annually - and the reduced energy use contributes to en- vironmental savings as well.” Hydro helped out in completing the project with a $4,899 Power Smart rebate acknowledging the change- over of the District's final 125 old-style lamps. . Power Smart is recognized as one of the most progressive energy- efficiency programs in North America. Since its inception in 1989, it has saved approximately 734 million kilowatt-hours of electricity — more than enough energy to supply 73.400 new B.C. homes.
