STARTING A business these days is not easy. By Surj Rattan News Reporter But business success stories are the foundation upon which new businesses are built. In the case of West Vancouver's Neat Things, a business specializ- ing in handmade jewelry, it’s been 10 years of seeing neat things happen in the same location. Neat Things owner Madeleine Chisholm not only sells home- made jewelry, she also teaches the art to children and adults. “We have quite a following. I make everything that I sell here, and I’ve been making these things for eons,’” said Chisholm. She adds that her daughter one day brought home a chain she had made in high school and ‘I just went from: there.” Christmas is probably the busi- est time of year for Chisholm and those who take her jewelry classes. And it is not unusual for passers-by to hear the busy sound of hammering while walking along Marine Drive just outside her shop. Chisholm says she is very im- pressed with the quality of pro- jects the children have produced over the years. “They can make everything the adults can make. They're using ali sorts of tools,’’ Chisholm savs. She adds that business has been very good for her during the 10 years she has operated Neat Things from ics 1765 Marine Dr. location in West Vancouver. Originally from Halifax, Chisholm has lived in West Van- couver for the past 33 years. “We're offering people some- thing different. 1’m happiest when I have work in my hand,”’ says Chisholm. ‘*‘My workshop is my island, my bit of heaven."’ Before coming ta West Van- couver, Chishoim worked as an art instructor and offered several workshops in B.C. and Alberta. She has also held art exhibitions. eat Things: A jewel of a business Madeleine Chisholm’s business specializes in handmade jewelry NEWS photo tony Peters WEST VANCOUVER’S Madeleine Chisholm holds up one of her creations at her Neat Things jewelry studio.
