Vocal jazz talent to perform Centennial Theatre hosts 16th annual festival MORE THAN 15 years ago, Carson Graham music directors Peter Taylor and Rob Karr noticed there weren’t many op- portunities for young vocal jazz students to perform locally. With a lot of organizing and hard work, they invited school groups from all over the Pacific Northwest to compete in the first B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival in 1976. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter On April 10 and 11, Carson Graham is celebrating its 16th an- nual B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival at Centennial Theatre. The event has grown con- siderably in the past few years: 53 groups are taking part in the com- petition portion of the festival this year, which will be followed by a evening performance. But music director Norma Mai says the event has always remain- ed true to its original ideals. “The main thing was always putting kids first. | look at seine other festivals and they’ve become almost a commercial venture. We spend our time doing clinics and workshops for kids — it’s not a place where music stores wil be selling things.”’ Mai, who hails from Alberta, says the festival has, over the years, developed a strong reputa- tion as a first-rate jazz festival. ‘1 heard of the festival when | was living in Alberta. It's got a great name, mainly because of its strong adjudicators. They've always treated the kids with respect.” Past adjudicators have included UCLA‘s Michele Weir, Phil Matt- son and California-born freelance singer, composer, songwriter, Roger Treece. This year’s concert, heid Satur- day evening, features Seattle jazz ensemble Full Voice, who will be accompanied by Vancouver Community College’s Soundwave and the Carson Graham Vocal Jazz Choir. The chance to compete is a big attraction for the students, says Mai, but it’s also an opportunity for friendships to form. As far as Mai is concerned, werking towards the annua! festival is a positive and uplifting experience for the students she works with. “So many musically-talented students don’t do so well in the sciences and for them this is an area they can really excel. It makes school life very pasitive.”’ Tickets to the Saturday evening concert will be available at the door. Tickets are going fast, so Mai suggests advance reservations be made by phoning 987-9341.
