MAILBOX Comment reported was slanderous to witches Dear Editor: I'd like io respond to some un- fortunate remarks in the story “Occultist alleges murder at- tempt’? on page 3 of the Aug. ? North Shore News. Regardless of whether tne allegations by Sprung result in charges being laid it is important to remember that the charges will be against individuals, not against the family of magickal religions and not even against the Ordo Templi Orientis. The cir- cumstances of the alleged offences are irrelevant to the crimes being alleged — illegal drug possession and threatening bodily harm. [t is irrelevant that the circumstances were those of an OTO initiation (no matter how badly botched). But for Sprung, who is nota witch, to say that ‘‘There are people that become involved to be able to justify a set of actions like Alano Club thanks NV councils Dear Editor: On behalf of the board of directors, manager, staff, and members of The Alano Ciub of the North Shore, | wish to take this opportunity to express our most sincere thanks and gratitude to the District and City of North Vancouver, respectively. Tn July of this year our non- profit organization received fund grants from both the District of North Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver that will help in keeping our doors open to those in 12 Step Recovery Programs. Without the aid of grants we would find ourselves in a difficult position in our never-ending at- tempts to keep up with maintenance, renovations, and repairs to our facility. As anyone can appreciate, we strive to main- tain a pleasant environment for our members’ comfort within our means. This is always 4 challenge as we rarely break above operating costs. The only way we manage to keep going is through the generos- ity of those in !evels of govern- ment, such as the City and District of North Van, who con- sider our applications in @ positive light. Therefore, in thanking the aformentioned councils, ! specifically include the District Mayor Murray Dykeman, City Mayor Jack Loucks, and all those persons active on council for their gracious participation in bringing this together for us. A lot of people use magic and wicca (witchcraft) as a coverup for other indulgences... as a coverup for drugs, alcoholism, sex and prostitution’’ is slanderous and betrays a great lack of knowledge of the Craft. Witchcraft is a religion oased on the Goddesses and Old Gods of nature, with an ethical code based on both individual freedom and mutual responsibility. Just as recent trials in Newfoundland and elsewhere have shown that there are Roman Catholic priests and lay brothers who have repeatedly sexually abused young boys but nobody is suggesting that these ethical breaches are typical of Christianity nor even Roman Catholicism, the allegations against some witches and members of the OTO have nothing to do with our religions and everything to do with our human failings. [| am pleased that Sprung has gone to the police, since it’s the police and courts who whould deal with crime, regardless of the circumstances of the crime.
