It’s very much alive and well and thriving! iY Joy Metcalfe tells cil ... The relocation and opening of the Deep Cove Gallery is one more feather in the collective cap of the community. Penny and John Crockett had their first North Shore art gallery just up the street on Gailant Avenue. They had been there for three years and, given the poten- tial of the area, were anxious to expand. On Wednesday evening, as temperatures soared, they hosted a pleasant reception, well catered by Linda Rathy, to welcome old friends, neighbors and clients to their new Deep Cove Gallery loca- tion. They’re probably situated as close as you can get to the water at the very end of Gallant Avenue, in a pretty, alabaster white space, perfect for their art displays and exhibitions. In fact, some of their friends from the eastern part of the Lower Mainland boated over into the cove on their 40-foot-plus NEWS phote Cindy Goodman MICHAEL TICKNER signs Island Dreamer one of his works at the new Deep Cove Gallery. yacht just to take in the party. He’s the big push behind B.C.'s Big Brothers organization, clothier of note, and jokester extraordinaire, Murray Goldman! A couple of Saturdays ago, at the National Big Brothers conven- tion in Quebec City, Murray was presented with the Presidential Commendation Award, an award that has only been given out twice in the long history of the Cana- dian Big Brothers. To say that he was surprised and honored is an understatement. Murray originally came from Montreal, so, in turn, he stunned everyone, as they had surprised him with this award, by delivering a good portion of his speech en Francais! Tres Bon, Monsieur Goldman! A gentleman who is obviously not just another pretty facet... Murray was also front and cen- tre under the Birks clock this past Wednesday for the Big Brothers” annual car raffle. At high noon in the bright sunshine, he plucked the name of the winner out of the barrel of 6,000 entries. The lucky winner of a 1990 candy-apple red 944 S2 Porsche was Kelvin Koh. ae t The Coach House Inn will never be the same following last Sun- day’s riotous 1990 North Ameri- can Belly Flop Championships. In the over-300 pound category, the reigning Belly Flop champ, Slim McLachlan, came through again to win the crown. But the most colorful group of floppers was the under-250 pound category. The winner there was 240-pound Jack Dagle, bartender at Jack Lonsdale’s Pub in North Van. He did a take-off on James Brown performing a very funny Hot Tub Show. The place was packed, and ac- cording to one of the organizers, they made ‘‘tons of money”’ for the B.C. Special Olympics.
