THE PROVINCIAL government recently struck up a private sector advisory committee aimed at focusing on B.C.’s trade with the European Community. B.C.'s_ International Business and immigration Minister Elwood Veitch said the new European Community Advisory Committee will advise him on private sector concerns and information re- quirements regarding trade with the European Community, par- ticularly in the light of plans to set up a single internal market by 1992. The European Community is the world’s largest trading entity, ac- counting for one-fifth of world trade. It represents a combined market of 325 million consumers, with a gross annual product of $4-trillion. nae CANFOR CORPORATION recently announced plans to sell its High Level Division in Alberta to a subsidiary of Daishowa Canada Co. Ltd., subject to government and regulatory approval. The division manufactures 240-million board feet of lumber annually and has approximately 230 employees. The transaction is expected to be completed by April 30. Trade, the companies are attending Alimentaria, a biennial show which attracts major European buyers and over 500,000 visitors to Barcelona. aeaenr Franchise firm opens A NORTH Vancouver man has opened up a_ one-of-a-kind business in the St. Clair Centre in downtown Vancouver. Ted Van Samang has spent 10 years working on The Franchise Site and Education Centre, which is a store specializing in promoting franchises for other companies. “It’s a permanent facility where we will have up to 100 of Canada’s best franchises on display. It’s a one-stop shopping centre for peo- ple,’’ said Van Samang. He added that for a monthly fee, his store will dislay the fran- chises of other companies on 4 2 x 3 kiosk and that the displays will also feature color pictures of the franchises, a complete history of the companies and the capital costs needed to buy into a franchise. “What the franchise customer gets from us is a qualified lead for new franchises,’’ said Van Samang. ‘‘We are giving people a Permanent one-stop shopping fa- cility where they can evaluate the franchise. We are selling the fran- chise.”* He added that he has opened the first business of its kind in Canada and hopes to open other stores in the future. Van Samang said his store also offers financial help to people interested in buying a fran- chise. Among the companies that have kiosks at the Franchise Site and Education Centre are Mac's Con- venience Stores, Budget Break and Muffler, Pastel, the Decorating Den, Speedy Printing Centres and Treats.
