ge Infant A seats save lives EVERY YEAR in’Canada, more than 70 children under the age of five diewin car accidents, and more than 4,000 are injured, according to Statistics compiled by ICBC. The sad fact is that most of these injuries and deaths ure preventable through the proper use of infant and child seats. AutoMotion - Greg Wilson To understand why children need child seats and not seat belts, it is necessary to understand the difference between a child’s body and an adult's. This information was compiled in a com- prehensive study by Trans- port Canada entitled The Human Collision. Unlike an adult, a child’s broad, undeveloped pelvis does not have the prominent crests needed to provide a contact area for a lap belt. These do not develop until approximately age 10. A young child's skull is softer and much larger in proportion to the rest of the FALL & WINTER Replace engine oil & filtersTop up all fiuid fevels. The rib cage is thinner and more clastic. And a child's prominent abdomen provides only limited protec- lion to the farge internal organs. A small child's heavy head and fragile skull make him more likely to suffer serious head injuries, even in low- speed accidents, Spinal injuries can also occur. As well as providing skeletal support, the spine encloses and protects the spinal cord and central ner- vous system. Infants weighing less than nine kilograms (20 pounds) should be seated in a rear- facing infant scat. The baby is strapped into the seat with a five-point harness and the seat is secured with a lap belt. The advantage of a rear- facing infant seat is that it distributes the force of an accident evenly over the baby’s body, reducing risk of injury. Forward-facing child seats are used for children weighing from nine kilograms (20 pounds) to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). The child is secured by a five- point harness or a protective shield and the seat is secured by the lap belt and by a tether strap attached to a secure bolt on the rear parcel shelf.
