Halloween display torched ALL HELL broke loose in a Tempe Heights Halloween pum- pkin patch Tuesday night when malevolent pranksters armed with fire crackers torched a seasonal front yard display just completed by 41 neighborhood kids and 16 parents. “We wanted to show the fun side of Halloween, not the ghoulish side,’’ said Barb Gerrett. Gerrett and family had just recently moved from Victoria into a new home on Munday Place and decided, along with next-door- neighbor Vicky Robertson, to set up a carved pumpkin patch display complete with a friendly scarecrow as a way to bring together the neighborhood. The patch was set for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin and a fireworks display Saturday night. “Most of the people left by about 6:30 p.m. and we went in for dinner. By about 7:30 p.m. some neighvors noticed fire on the ground. The scarecrow was burn- ing and they said flames shot up as high as the garage roof,’ Gerrett said. Alert neighbors managed to douse the fire with nearby hoses by the time North Vancouver City firefighters arrived. But said Gerrett, ‘“‘The Great Pumpkin will still arrive.” A new pumpkin patch will be up for Saturday night. And North Vancouver City Fire Department firefighter Andy Schmidt will be volunteering his time to supervise the fireworks display. The friendly scarecrow took the brunt of the fire damage with little more than the soles of his rubber boots remaining among the char- red shells of the jack-o’-lanterns.
