Feed the NOTHING quite prepared the world for the impact of the televi- sion coverage of Ethiopia during its famine crisis. Canadians looked through their television windows on to the par- ched and desolate plains of Africa, and into their comfortable living Tooms came pictures of starving, suffering and dying children and adults. The response of the Canadian people was extraordinary, as they donated funds to feed the hungry. But a survey of the situation to- day shows that, while in many areas the rains have returned, there are still 19,000,000 people exposed to famine and illness resulting from mainuirition. A long term recovery program is urgently need- ed, The local fundraising groups continue to be active. A recent concert entitled Music for Hope was held at the Centen- nial Theatre in North Vancouver. At the initiation of coor- dinator Zeri Aziz of West Van- couver’s Mayor’s Campaign for Famine Relief, the Ismaili Women’s Organization planned the event, which featured Indian classical music. West Vancouver Mayor Derrick Humphreys and his wife Margaret attended. The sum of $5,000 raised from the event was given to the West Vancouver Mayor’s Campaign Committee, one of the many groups in the province set up to coordinate fundraising and to liaise with non-government organizations who are working at the grassroots level in Africa. The West Vancouver Committee has been very active in famine relief work for many months. Other events are planned such as a fashion show to be held at the Macisaac Clark Lazyers ICBC Claims Fee by percenta No charge tlest visit 1230-1176 W. Georgia Vancouver, B.C. STUDY CONFIRMS “The purposes of our study to confirm the relationship between changes in the menstrual cycle caused by exercise and loss of bone density, to determine if there is a risk factor of early osteoporosis in Charles and Di arrive April 30 THE ITINERARY for their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales will begin April 30, end May 7 and include visits to Vic- toria, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George and Burnaby. In making the announcement of the itinerary, the premier said the detailed program has yet to be finalized and will not be approved until Buckingham Palace staff visit B.C. in March. INFERTILITY “These factors can cause women to become temporarily in- fertile. This reaction most likely occurs because the body is focuss- ing on the demands being made by the increased physical activity,” says Dr. Prior, “Once the body has adapted to the increased level of exercise, a normal menstrual cyele returns."* But Dr. Prior is concerned about the possible harmful effects to bone mass caused by lower levels of estrogen during changes in the menstural cycle. MONITOR CHANGES ‘In the first part of our project we will study this relationship by monitoring changes in bone densi- ty over a one-year period in three groups of women: Those who are training for a marathon and who are increasing their activity significantly; those who run a reg- ular distance weekly; and those who do less than one hour of aerobic activity a week. Our expec- tation is that the first group will show a change in bone density." The second phase of the study will focus on the treatment of decreased bone density using a synthetic progesterone hormone called Provera. hfs TK LOMOTS 1054 Marine Drive (at Mackay) North Vancouver 980-3595 OPEN 24 HOURS - 7 DAYS A WEEK for & present this coupon | FREE % REGUL Limit one dozen per purchase, Not valid with other specials.
