West Van's bronco buster SOME PEOPLE might refer to West Van's Paul McAlduff as a bronco buster. The only difference is that instead of just one horsepower to tame, the 31-year-old McAlduff manhandles upwards of 250 horsepower at a single time. He 1s a 4x4 truck racer who rides one of the meanest, thundering, ground-gripping, tire-torturing trucks im- aginable and manages to win his fair share of hiliclimb, drag and _ wheel-to-wheel races in western Canada. McAlduff got his first taste of competition eight years ago in Manitoba when he saddled up his trusty Inter- national Scout Il. ‘‘The most exciting form of competition in this ‘mechanical rodeo’ 1s wheel-to-whee!l racing,’’ he claims. That is eight to ten ‘*tHeavy Metal’’ class trucks geared up to race each other on a closed circuit earth track. At Mount Cheam Raceway near Chilliwack, B.C. McAlduff and his BFGoodrich-equipped truck have churned dirt with the best competitors and come away with class victornes in both drag races and wheel-to- wheel competitions. Now McAlduff, a resident of West Vancouver, sets his sights on a second Western Off Road Racing champion- ship title to add to his list of past accomplishments which includes five successive Top Driver of the Year Awards, three Super Stock Class Championships and two Top Eliminator drag titles while racing in Manitoba After moving to British Columbia to open a business called Per- formance Mart Speed Shop Grab a racquet DEL BROOK © omemutnits Contre located at Road bras anid which as 600 West Queens three racquetball One Squash court open seven dave aowcoh at the fothowrngy canes Monday ter briday MAS up ors ter FM pega Svat aS cr ec oe os Ssvirichany Os ee bere vevuth o Pitan c aay phe rte overir crabeberen ra epee! Street and Trail competition. Most weekends find him racing somewhere with assistance from a crew which usually includes some family members. His brother Mike, and sometimes, brothers Alan, or Mark crew for Paul and as quick as they can switch the All-Terrain Radial T/A tires uSed for drag rac- ing to the Mud-Terrain Radial T/A tires he prefers for wheel-to-wheel racing; Paul is back racing to win. Recently at a hillelimb in Kelowna, B.C. he used his tow vehicle, a 1977 Inter- national Traveller to conqter the hillclimb and place se- cond in class around an obstacle course. Racing takes him as far away as Olympia, Washington, but usually when the dust or mud settles, you will find Paul McAlduff beaming a victory smile from under his lucky B-F. Goodrich race cap.
