Why is your union opposed to the removal of spare board? 3. Therefore I would like your answers to the following questions: ae 1. Is it true that your union is broke and without any strike funds, and if so, how can this strike continue for an indefinite length of time? 2. I understand that the part-time drivers the com- pany wants to introduce are to replace the spare board where 12% of the drivers are guaranteed 37'% hrs. per week to fill in for sick drivers, and that this is po, which, of course, could cause even further embarrassment to this city in terms of the problems already existing on the Expo site. 4. Are there any other companies who give their employees a choice of work- ing location, days and hours based on seniority such as Metro Transit does with their drivers? I’m sure the general public will be most grateful to the answers to these questions. Sue Cook North Vancouver Canada gets encyclopedia From page AG Two of his comments brought forth amused chuckles from his large and attentive audience. The first referred to the Canada Coun- cil. When asked for a grant they agreed, but only on con- dition that the volumes be bilingual. However, they would not pay for the translation, thus creating a Catch 22 situation: print two versions but get paid for one, or get no grant at all. Hence the successful ap- peal to the Alberta Government. After repeated turn-downs by Canadian banks, a friend told Hurtig that he should have called his encyclopedia the Mexican Encyclopedia, since Canadian banks lend more than 65 per cent of their money to non-Canadians. Uninformed about water Dear Editor I have been reading articles by Bob Hunter since the 1960s, and in general, I have been impressed by his insight and thoughtfulness. However, in his article entitl- ed “Troubled Waters’’ in your paper of June 20, 1984, he has demonstrated a singular lack of research with respect to the proposal by Colin Beach, Coast Moun- tain Aquasource Ltd. to load bulk fresh water for export at the unnamed creek (Freil Falls) below Freil Lake in Hotham Sound. I have been following this company’s efforts to develop the project closely, and am aware that what is propsosed- for the site will not result in aesthetic degradation. | have personally met with Mr. Beach and reviewed the engineered concept. For your reference, I am enclosing a letter of support which reflects my understanding, which I wrote to the Regional Director of the Lands Ministry. I am somewhat dismayed that Mr. Hunter has seen fit to present planned project. In the future it would be appreciated if Mr. Hunter would limit his commentary to subjects about which he has at least made an attempt to accurate- ly inform himself. Stewart J.
