A recent Ietter in the North
Shore News has served to
demonstrate again the
public’s lack of knowledge of
the rabies situation in B.C.

This province has _ for-
tunately not recorded a con-
firmed case of rabies in a dog
or cat since the isolated inct-
dent on Vancouver Island 15
years ago. However, B.C. 1s
not free of rabies in the
wildlife; rabid bats are found
here every year. No other
animals, contrary to common
belief, carry rabies in B.C.,
although skunks and other
mammals are important vec-
tdrs in other parts of the
conunent.

Beware of rabid bats

Rabid bats were found last
year in Maple Ridge, Mission
and Nanaimo, among other
places. In 1982, one was
found in a garden in Van-
couver. In other years, rabid
bats have been found on the
North Shore.

Fortunately, bats rarely
develop the furious vicious
form of rabies; instead, they
gradually develop paralysis
until they are not able to fly.
However, fluttering around
on the ground at this stage,
they can attract the attention
of a curious dog or cat.

In Vernon in 1982, a rabid
bat bit a boy who was trying
to remove it from the swimm-
ing pool. Because he was able
