C. buckling up for world record bid A bid to make British Columbia a world leader in buckling up will be launched this month by ICBC in co operation with police and community groups. This campaign, beginning May 20 aims to increase seat belt use from the current B.C. average of 56 per cent to 80 per cent. Intensive public information = and police enforcement programs will continue through May culminating in a two-day survey of seat belt use in 28 B.C. communities on June 3 and 4. Authorities agree increased seat belt use can reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash by up to 90 per cent. Records show that 80 per cent of Canadians killed in motor vehicle accidents were not buckled up. Of 800 severely disabled men and women receiving no-fault benefits from ICBC, only five per cent were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident that changed their lives. The “80% Clicks!” campaign is the first of its ’ kind and will be filed for possible inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records. “Our provincial goal of an 80 per cent buckleup rate has not been achieved anywhere in the world,” says Patty Manduca, manager of ICBC’s’” Traffic Safety Education Department. “We in B.C. are already way ahead of many countries in our concern to reduce injunes and deaths on the road. If we can reach our goal we will set a standard by which the world will measure itself.” The campaign slogan “80% Clicks!” and the message “Let's pull together June 3 and 4” will be carried that on posters, bumper stickers, lapel buttons, information flyers and door-knob tags inviting B.C. residents to buckle up. ICBC claim centres are being set up as distribution points for “80% Clicks!” materials to be picked up by students, police, and community groups planning events and displays in support of the program. Flashing signs, billboards and shipboard broadcasts will carry the buckile-up message to travellers aboard B.C. Ferries. Major com- panies in the Lower Mainland and_ throughout the province will be en- couraged to use “80% Chicks!” bumper stickers on their fleet vehicles and initiate employee programs promoting séat belt use on 296 Pemberton Ave., N.V. 985-9155 Oo you want to tell nearly 70 000 car owners in the North Shore market about the good service you offer” Call Drew Finerty to advertise on this page 980-0511 erneerd coreprenctere-cterewet arerrenretneh muraday news north hore news RADIATOR REPAIRS ’. The seat belt program is the second of its kind to be organized by the Provincial Police Advisory Committee Since it was established by the Traffic Safety Education Department of ICBC in 1982. The RCMP and municipal police forces will co- ordinate readblocks, road- side reminders and public information campaigns. Violation of seat belt laws can result in fines ranging from $15 to $35. In addition, the courts and ICBC have the authority to reduce settlements in cases where not wearing a_ seat belt contributed to the severity of a claimant’s injuries.
