B2 - Wednesday, August 11, 1982 - North Shore News 4, by Andy Fraser Some enterprising individual should find out if he, or she, could locate a game film of the Whitecaps destruction over Fort- Lauderdale Strikers from Saturday night, then market it to all youth soccer coaches and teams as an instructional film. Very few games adapt themselves so readily to all- round instructional films as did this one. For anyone who wanted to " learn more about the ‘hows’ of the match, this was a classic. Using a make shift line up because of injuries and suspensions, the Whitecaps came up with one of their most potent attack games of the season. Passing of the ball was bang-on; the use of open space was classicly illustrated on a number of occasions; off the ball running by Hankin, Taylor and Valentine, was at its best; and the continual attacks of midfielders rushing in to play off the forwards was enough to drive the Striker back line to ‘distraction. In_addition, some superb goal ‘keeping by Jan Van Beveren, the former Dutch International was alons worth the price of ad- mission. The 41 win, shows the awesome depth of the Whitecaps. Giles threw in a lineup that again had players in unfamiliar roles, but who came through as_ true professionals. Terry Yorath, our erst- while columnist and team captain, moved to left fullback and has _ never looked better. Constantly attacking from the back, he distributed‘ the ball with a finesse and style that only Football camp soon A FOOTBALL camp is being sponsored by the British Columbia Amateur Football Assocation from August 29 to September 2 at West Vancouver High School. Mountaineers make provincials NORTH Shore Moun- taincers have ended their 1982 Junior “B” Baseball Season by finishing among the top four teams in the province. The Mountaincers entered the B.C. And of course, our other Sunday writer, Peter Lorimer, continues to disprove, the aging theory. In fact, Lorimers’ moves, practised for 20 years in the professional ranks, reminds one of old Satchel Paige's comments about aging: ‘How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you was?’. The game showed that the sport, can be classic en- tertainment: It was also the kind of game that coaches of young players dream about having their charges watch. Just a brief note of thanks to Messrs Lorimer and Yorath for taking time out the other morning to make a ball presentation. It was a . simple thing, yet it was meaningful for Andres Gurumeta from Mexico. Andres was visiting North Vancouver along with his wife, who formerly lived here. Having played professional in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Andres knew many of the players from their reputations and was excited about seeing a game. When his sister-in-law, a former News employee got an autographed Whitecaps ball, Yorath and Lorimer, were only too agreeable to present the ball and meet Andres at a practice. No big deal, but something that will be remembered by Andres Gurumeta for a long time.
