BS mailbox ee Tiny-enrolment schools a luxury Dear Editor: I gather from your March 1? edition that Mr. Agnus Ree, MLA for Capilano, 1s “unusually angry’ over reports that the North Van School Board is proposing the closure of Hamilton School, among others. I'd love to see that. To my knowledge. Mr. Ree has never even been. slightly miffed, let alone interested in, educational develop- ments on the North Shore or in the province. His sudden interest seems to indicate an elecfDon is imminent, and that he has an issue which he senses will get his name in the press as a_ saviour of education. What makes the whole affair especially comical 1s the fact that Mr. Ree’s rage 1s apparently sparked by efforts on the part of trustees to follow the budget slashing dictates of a government of which he is a member. Noel Wrnght. on the other hand. pontificates that the trustees must get” their pnoriies mght when they wield the axe. He claims that any thought of pmorities must have eluded the trustees up to now, and quotes Mr. Ree as saying that they are nothing more than puppets of their ad- ministrators That 1s) gratultous non- sense Eo ison the board last vear when we directed the administration to sumey the MR. Trustees are not quite the phant idiots Mr. Wright claims they are. They know full well that the most touchy) political move a board can make ts to close a school. And they know very well indeed that the fine programme developed in Hamilton by Bill Sulymka and his staff has helped many students. But they know equally well that such a programme can work equally well in Carson Graham, that larger high schools make far more sense that those of a tiny enroliment in providing the more extensive programmes of all kinds needed by high school students, and that while closing a school is one of the mosteffective ways of saving laxpayers money, It 1s only one of many which must be faced in the situation produced by budget cuts as savage as More mailbox p. A8 those forced on the board by Mr. Ree’s government. Any school closure hurts, bul trustees have to act even when it turns out that their acuon provides a local MLA with a flamboyant campaign issue. Mr. Wrights zeal for restraint in the public sector is legendary. and his little lesson on how a wise family handles such a problem is instructive. He argues that it will cut back on luxuries, and a good educational system is a necessity. To my mind a lot of high schools with uny enrollments is a luxury, while a_ well-filled high school, offemng a solid vanety of courses. including the programme now in place at Hamilton, is a necessity.
