Bears marauding through
the new Cypress Park Estate
development kept the
phones ringing constantly at
West Vancouver Police
Department over the
weekend as dozens of
residents called with con-
cerns after sighting the
animals. Lo

Though Fish and Wildlife
Branch already had a live
trap set’ up in the area
because of problems with
several bears there, they
were sending up an officer
with a tranquilizer gun
yesterday (Tuesday).

The sightings started just
before the weekend and by
the time the weekend was
over police had received

dozens of calls from people

who had seen bears on
Woodview Place, Woodside
Place, Wood Green and
Wood Valley Place.

Regional Conservation
Officer for Fish and Wildlife
Bert Wilson says the bears
appear quite bold.

“In this particular area
they are out. in broad

-daylight and in back yards,

so I have a feeling they are
not showing too much
respect for people — and
that is of concern to us.”

There is at least one sow
bear with cubs in that area,
although Wilson is not
certain as to whether they
are this years’s cubs.or last

Wilson hopes such bears
can be tranquilized and
removed form the area.

“We wouldn't want’ to
destroy a sow and cubs if
possible. We would rather
relocate them, although this
may change with attitude of

the bear and the problems _

Residents of the area are
advised to be particularly
careful with their garbage,
which attracts the bears,
keeping it inside until
collection days.
