(Terry Peters photo) NEWS shares the top The North Shore News earned a share of first place in the North Shore Industrial Soccer League Sunday, by shutting out La Belle Sole 4- 0. The win, coupled with North Shore Darkroom’s 1-1 stalemate with the district Firefighters, gave the News the share. Darkroom, who hold two games in hand over the News, were held to just a split in points, as the Firemen played = an aggressive defensive match. The game had a notion to get chippy, but refereee Jim Ewens issued yellow cards to both teams to quickly restore order. Good weekend for coaches With few exceptions. it was a good weekend for soccer in the coaches league. Nothing exceptional. no mayor upsets, but good soccer according to league officials. Time-Out came up with one of their best efforts of the season against Carlings. but sull went down 4-2 at the hands of the league leaders Lynn Vallcy played a strong game to take Squamish Chiefs 5-3) while Molsons won Olympics 3-2 Old Timers took Goldcaps 6-3 while Bosch Royals downed Canbbean All Stars 1d In the only lop-sided game of the day Grassies dumped fagle Harbor 10-0 oul over Car Rentals trom $10 95 a day free mileage “Maiiinby Bentibs Sth Oldies but Goodies 980-1515 1528 Pemberton Ave. . frarpers Kevin Gaunt notched the goal for the Darkroom, while Bobby Brigham tallied for the Firemen, who are only two points away for a three way jam for top spot. In the other game played, Darryl Evans scored the only goal necessary in order for Pegasus to nip Fagen’s Den 1-0. The win gave Pegasus a comfortable three point lead over the Sole, for the fourth spot. Goalkeeper Buzz Zuelke turned back every shot Fagen's directed at the goal to register the shutout. The News scored two goals via the penalty shot route. ‘Hollywood’ Gravenor turned in a fine game with the help of Joe Perras and Drew Finerty, pulling the ball off the line once each to. preserve Gravenor's fifth shutout of the season. Avalons clinch title Avalon Blues continued their domination of 3c Van Met soccer action on Sunday defeating their only close rivals, New West Luckies 2-1 at Kilmer Park. The win enabled the Blues to wrap up the division utle with a record of 11 wins and one tie with only two games left in league play. Avalon opened the scomng at the !5 minute mark when Henry Summers hit a left footed volley into the bottom right corner from ’ 20 yards out. The Blues had several more opportunities in the first half but failed to capitalize on their chances. Luckies came out at- tacking in the second half and caught the Blues in a defensive shell, and notched the tie goal at the 80 minute mark. Fortunately for the North Shore squad, the goal seemed to bring them back to hfe and at the 89 minute mark Ed Vanblankenstein hit a free kick allowing Ron Wilson to connect with a header for the winner. Offensive players of the game for Blues were Ron Wilson and Rob Boyd while defensively Ed Van- blankenstein and Shawn Scortez stood out. Last chance to get even.
