The North Vancouver Museum and Archives is launching three new displays to coincide with the event: A Watertront Transformed, From Logs to Lumber, and Bridg- ing the Lions Gate. West Van- couver’s Gertrude Lawson House Museum will be open for viewing as well. To cap off the event, the public is invited to climb aboard the SS Constitution on Sept. 19 for a free tour of the North Shore waterfront. Sculpture unveiled DEEP COVE residents endure probably more rain than anyone else on the North ‘Shore, so it is appropriate that a new piece of public art about to be unveiled at the entrance to Panorama Park in- cludes — you guessed it — an umbrella. Called Who’s Got the Um- brelia?, the marble sculpture is the work of Polish sculptor Greg Kawczynski, a former assistant professor at the Academy of Fine _ Arts In Krakow. Planned as the final touch to the Deep Cove Cultural Centre, the piece consists of two faces covered by a large multi-colored umbrella. Kawczynski’s sculpture will become part of a fountain situated in the square that forms the new entrance to Panorama Park. The official unveiling com- mences this Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10:45 a.m. Opera premiers WEST VANCOUVER’S best-loved composer Jean Coulthard’s opera The Return of the Native makes its world premiere debut at the Koerner Recital Hall Sept. 23-26. Based on the novel by .19th- century author Thomas. Hardy, Coulthard’s opera is a tragic tale of true love unfufilled. It took Coulthard, 85, 22 years to complete the opera, during which time she collaborated with librettist Edna Baxter. Best known for her compositions for piano and chamber sonatas, The Return of the Native is Coulthard’s only full-length opera. The Koerner performance, con- ducted by Capilano College’s Lars Kaario, boasts an all-Canadian cast featuring Mary Anne Barcellona, Bette Cosar, David Collins, Richard DevVillier, Linda James, Lynne Sterling, Angus Stuart and Shana White.
