Walt Neubrandt, a Hockey Hall of Fame “keeper of the cup,” brought it by the North Vancouver City fire hall where it was placed on the bumper of a fire truck. Firefighters posed with it until Clint Smith arrived. Smith, 86, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991. The West Vancouverite played on the New York Rangers’ 1940s cup-winning — team. During his U1-year career with the Rangers and the Chicago Black Hawks, he recorded 397 points and won the Lady Byng trophy for sportsmanship twice. He was penalized for only 24 minutes. Later, the cup. was lifted onto the Lord Stanley statue in Stanley Park —- not far from where the 1915 champion Vancouver Millionaires played in the long-gone Denman Arena. The original cup was: donated by Governor General Lord Stanley to Canada’s ama- teur hockey champion 1892. It’s on permanent dis- play in a walk-in vaule at the Hall of Fame in Toronto.
