Youth Theatre grads out there

Allan had an out-
there experience on
set for X-Files
recently.

During a location
shoot in North Van,
Allan met the young
actor who was to play
her character's daughter.
To her surprise, the
young actor, Emily Perkins, was a for-
mer student of hers. Allan figures she
taught Perkins, now in her 20s, at the
beginning of her teaching career with
Vancouver Youth Theatre (VYT),
close to 10 vears ago.

Perkins is not the only working
actor with VYT credits to ber name

“Our main focus is nor
to turn them into big movie stats,”
she says of the voungsters aged nine
and up who attend VYT"s various
programs. :

Allan. Playbuilding programs that
involve young actors in
the creation of a show
from start to finish
allow youth to
“accomplish geals as an
individual and 13 a
group.”
This year, VYT oro-
grams are offered on
the North Shore for
the first time. Allan
leads Plavbuilding ses-
sions for ages nine
through 19 on
Thursdays, 4 to 6 p.m.,
April 16 to June 4 at
St. Davids United

Arust for Kids Trast issues its
newest print Sarurday, April 18.

The E.J. Hughes print Seashore at
Crafton is the first original print creat-
ed by the prominent Canadian artist
in more than 60 vears. Hughes, who
wrew up in North Van, was described
oy Jack Shadbolt, also a patron of the
trust, “as the most engaging intuitive
painter of the B.C. landscape since
Emily Carr.”

The image, savs the trust’s manag-
ing director Bill MacDonald, is “clas-
sic E.J. Hughes with a nch beach
landscape littered with the rhythmic
byproducts of coastal logging.”

“The 26-biock woudeut will be
issued in an edition of 100, each one
signed, titled and numbered by the
artist and printed on handmade
Hosho paper. Issue price is $2,000

A reception at 2:30 p.m. on April
18 will take place in the Artist for
Kids Gallery ar “he Leo Marshall
Curriculum Centre, 810 W. 21st St,
North Vancouver.

The trust was established in “$9
through a partnership benween North
Vancouver School District and promi-
nent Canadian artists such as the late
Pall Reid, Gordon Smith and Jack
Shadbolt. Through the sale of original
prints created by these and other artist
patrons, the trust has raised more
than $1.3 million to fund art enrich-
ment programs such as the Paradise
Valley Summer School of Visual Art.
