City, homeowner at odds

A homeowner has been granted
one more opportunity to comply
with building codes or the city
will file a notice of
contravention against him.

Boulevard, who built an addition to his
house almost seven years ago, was told
June 2 by North Vancouver City council
that he had six weeks to bring his home to
code or face legal action. The homeowner
had claimed the city didn’t bother to check
the addition while it was under construc-
tion; the city says it is the owner's onus to
call for an inspection.

The irked homeowner said he felt

“wronged” by the city and thar it should
be the city’s responsibiliry to inspect new
construction. An equally frustrated council
reluctantly gave Grimwood two more
weeks to comply with the building codes.

“We've been deferring this and defer-
ring this and deferring this,” Coun.
Barbara Sharp said. “We keep hearing from
this individual, ‘Just one more week, just
one more week,’ When do you say that’s
enough time?”

The motion to defer legal action for
two weeks was passed 5-2. Coun. Darrell
Mussatto and Mayor Jack Loucks opposed.
