The new Junior B hockey team opens the season next Monday night in West Van. New North Shore Jun or B hockey team laces ‘em up By Andrew McCredie Associate Editor andrew@nsnews.com A 30-year tradition was renewed Monday night at West Vancouver Arena as the North Shore Griffins Junior B hockey team played their first-ever home game. The Griftins are one of nvo new expansion teams to join the Pacific International Junior Hockey League (PISHL) this season, and this week's game marked the return of junior boys hockey to the North Shore after the North Shore Flames pulled up stakes four years ago. And despite having fallen on rough times lately — alue mostly to a dire lack of ice Gme — junior hockey on the North Shore has a long and storied history. The Nor-Wes Caps started the puck rolling in 1967, and over the past three decades hundreds of players have learned about hockey and life as members of North Shore junior teams. Junior B is the third tier of junior hockey played in Western Canada, with the highest calibre being Junior A (ic. the Kamloops Blazers), the next the B.C. Junior League, or Tier Two Junior (ie. the Surrey Eagles). The concept behind the PIJHL is to allow junior age players a chance to stay at home and still continue to enjoy a high calibre of hockey. Many of the players hope to work their way into college scholarships south of the border or just develop their skills. Typically, the only difference in players from one tier to another is size and speed. Griffins team owner Ken Wilson, a West Vancouver businessman, and ccam general manager Phil De Grandpre of North Vancouver sought the new fran- chise to give North Shore players a place to play, and from all accounts Monday night their plans have been well received. According to the volunteer ticket-seller, 107 people paid to watch the historic game, and a quick head count revealed attendance somewhere in the 175 range. See Griffins page §
