Marcel Dupuis, ; who lives next door to Austin. “Dupuis 1 worked all his life in the ‘construction business, so he is used “to irritating noises." - , But, he said, the persistent thunk - of the diamond drill “annoys you.” Since Austin’s lot was part of an ‘original parcel purchased by Joseph -; Burr in 1888, he also owned the ‘mineral tights to.125 acres (50 ‘ hectares) in the area. -. But even if he had found some- "thing, it was hardly likely the gov- “ernment would have authorized the “establishment of a mine. “North Vancouver is no longer partial farming, logging and min- ing,” Jarvis pointed out. “It’s a bed- room community. “The irony is I am a critic for | Energy, Mines and they haven’t ‘ opened a:mine in this province for so damn long, and then they go and issue.a permit in my own riding.” Austin’s enterprise, about which he was tight-lipped with the media, didn’t make him a rich man. It also left him with what Dupuis describes as “a lot full of gravel.” But as far as Dupuis is concerned, it turned out okay. “(The equipment) moved out and we’re back to our peaceful neighborhood again,” he said. “Everybody’s enjoying it.” THE FOLLOWING is a brief sum- mary of agendas for North Shore municipalities and school districts and new business licences: MEETING AGENDA Nerth Vancouver City Council: June 13 North Vancouver District Council: June 13 West Vancouver District Council: June 6 West Vancouver School Board: June 6 North Vancouver School Board: June 14 BUSINESS LICENCES West Vancouver District: B.I.T. Haddock compared Stoltmann to John Muir, the conservationist founder of the Sierra Club. “Randy had an ency- clopedic knowledge of the land ° and the mountains around here,” he said. : Stoltmann was not only famil- iar with all the mountain-tops and the groves of trees growing there, particularly old-growth trees, but also with the history of wilderness exploration in southwestern B.C. He was B.C.’s expert on big trees, said Haddock. “He had a commitment to the wilderness unlike anyone I’ve ever known.” The memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. at the church at 2062 Esquimalt. ; A special tribute will also be paid to Stoltmann at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at the regular meeting of the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.
