14- ~ Friday, August 7 7, 1992 ~ North Shore News HOME & GARDEN Trees play important role WE ARE a world of machines ... cars, airplanes, factories and electric gener- ators. Most run on fossil fuels which, when burned, give off polluting carbon dioxide into the at- mosphere. Each of us is responsible for over 4,600 pounds of carbon produc- tion a year. We musi each do our part to clean up the atmosphere. We can reduce our energy consumption and carbon emissions. And, im- portantly, we can make a com- mitment to plant and care for trees. Why trees? Because trees grow by using the carbon in the at- mosphere. The larger a_ tree grows, the more carbon it is able to remove. In one year, a single tree can absorb as much carbon as is produced by a car driven 26,000 miles. Caring for existing trees is something that each responsible citizen of the world should do. Many trees die in their first 10 years of life. They must be pro- tected in this critical stage to en- sure their survival. The large, old trees in our forests and cities have thrived oniy by overcoming many hazards and hardships. The trees on our lawns, along our roads, and in our parks will not survive without our help. Insects, disease, building and road construction, drought, air pollution and other natural and man-made dangers are con- tinuously at work to weaken and ultimately kill our trees. When a tree dies, it releases carbon back into the air. The death of one 70-year-oid tree returns over three tons of carbon to the atmosphere. Our world needs many more trees. A personal commitment to planting and nurturing trees is vital to the health of our planet. Every single tree planted or cared for is important; every year a mature tree is kept alive is a help. Here are some facts to think about: @ Trees need pruning, fertilizing and watering in order to thrive. @ A tree doesn’t reach its most productive stage of carbon storage for about 10 years, and many irees don’t survive that long. The average tree in a metropolitan area survives only about eight years. @ One million acres of forest are fost to city growth each year. @ Of every four city trees that die or are removed, only one is replaced.
