Trust your own judgment From page 14 Put that item on and pinpoint why you enjoy wearing it, whether it is because of the basic style, the sliraming lines, the color, the quaiity, the texture and weight of fabric or the details. Base all of your clothing on those same principles. If you are most confident in your business wear (with tailored and straight lines, sophisticated jackets, skirts and other feminine styling with dressed-up accessories), choose similar details in your casual wardrobe. Wear your jackets and dressy accessories with your jeans, and buy casual skirts and jumpers in- stead of pants. Some women don’t feel totally at ease unless they are in casual wear but have to dress in business wear for work or evening in heavy fabrics or knits and perhaps leather separates. If that is your situation, choose coat dresses or clean-lined knitted dresses instead of fussy, lightweight fabric styles, shirts rather than blouses and pantsuits, coulotte skirts and dressy stirrup pants instead of restrictive skirts. And add fun accessories to give yourself a sense of being casual, even when you are at work. Spend extra time when shopping for the pieces that you wear ‘‘in the other half of your life’’ because it won’t seem second nature to you to choose these items. Developing a personal style also begins with making an objective assessment of your physical char- acteristics and realizing your best features and those that you would like to change. Choose clothing styles, silhou- ettes and colors that flatter you. Never buy clothing that detracts from your appearance, even if you love the way it looks on a hanger or on someone else. It will never become one of your dependable standbys. Learn from the mistakes you have made in the past, many of which still probably hang in your closet. IF you don’t buy anything unless you absolutely can’t be without it, you will eventually love everything in your wardrobe. Keep a critical eye when shopp- ing and learn to trust your, own judgment, rather than that of an ontlooker, a friend or a mate. Check for little flaws in the way your clothing is worn that cheat you out of the best style inten- tions, Always check yourself in a full-length mirror after you have dressed. Be aware of what is going on in front and behind your back. Undergarments shouldn’t be visi- ble, shoulder pads should be in place and shoes should look ap- propriate with your outfit. Never wear hose with a run. it is one of the quickest, casiest ways to cheapen an outfit. And if you don’t have time to sew a broken zipper, a torn seam or a button, be sure you have made your quick-fix job totally invisible. If you understand how to use accessories, you may also under- stand fashion and style. Like a gift that is nicely wrapped, some- thing that is mediocre, but well packaged, can be made to look fabulous. And something old can easily be packaged to look new again. And, since how something is worn is vital in fashion today, ac- cessories become important. Many accessories are designed to stand on their own, not just to comple- ment clothing. Siatement-making pieces of jewelry or accessories can be the pivotal point to a variety of dif- ferent clothing looks. A favorite accessory can even become your trademark. —Carol Crenna The word worth a thousand pictures Menswear DUNN'S INTERNATIONAL PARK ROYAL SOUTH 922-2018 NATURALIZER § PARK ROYAL ...
