Surnmer’s heat causes faster wear and overinflation

WITH SUMMER just around the
corer, a car's tires require a lot
more attention, and more often.

“Because of summer there are
more separations (of tire layers)
and more wear,’ according to
Tass Akgut of North Vancouver's
T&L Tireworld.

Akgut, 39, has been in the tire
industry for 20 years and in North
Vancouver for three years. He
plans to open a tire recycling plant
on the North Shore in five
months,

not as strong.

“In rain or snow, tires wear
much slower,"’ he added.

Another reason tires wear faster
in the summer is because the air
inside the tire expands, causing
more wear in the middle of the
tread.

When air expands in the tire,
more pressure is created.

Overinflation, because of the
heat build-up, also causes the car
to wander, he said.

**You don’t have full contact on
the (road) surface, and that also
brings down the tire life.”

“When tires are overinflated
they wear out more in the middle,
and when they are underinflated
they wear out more on the
edges,’* Akgut said.

The liktihood of breaking the
steel or Fibregias belts in the tire
increases when the tire is
underinflated.

“Tire pressure should be check-
ed every day,’ Akgut advises.
“People don’t check their tires all
around. All they do is kick the
tire; they don’t look at the whole
tire to see if it’s worn on the in-
side.”’

Akgut also suggested motorists
check their wheel alignment more
often.

“This also causes wear on the
inside of the tire,’’ he explained.
“If the car has some sort of front
wheel alignment problem the drive
wheel wears out faster.’’

Another preventive measure
against excessive tire wear is to
have the car’s tires rotated every
15 to 20,000 kilometres, depen-
ding on the tires’ condition. He
said tires on front-wheel drive
vehicles should be checked more
often because the engine weight
increases wear, especially in the
summer.

When it comes to buying new
tires, Akgut§ suggests all-season
radials because of Vancouver's
large amount of rainfall.

‘“‘All-seasons are designed more
for getting rid of water under the
lire, and they prevent hydroplan-
ing,”’ he said. ‘‘Also.it’s good to
be ready for any weather.””

Vancouver truly has four dif-
ferent seasons — moe than any-
where else in the world, he said.

It is important to select a tire
that is appropriate for your
specific environment. ‘What may
be a good tire for California is
not necessarily good for the North
Shore.”’ he said. ‘tA tire must

have proper tread design for Van-
couver’s rain.””

According to Akgut, police on
the Lower Mainland had to change
over all their tires because they
had tires that were not specifically
suited to our environment.

Because of spring rain and ap-
proaching summer weather, spring
is a good time to buy new tires.
Winter is also a good time to pur-
chase new rubber because of the
traction needed for winter driving,
Akgut claims.

“A good or very good tire
should last from 60,000 to 80,000
kilometres,’ Akgut said.
