16 - Friday, February 28, 1992 - North Shore News HOME & GARDEN Avant-garde architect uses body as central theme in design work ELIZABETH DILLER and her partner Ricardo Scofidio are at the forefront of avant-garde architecture. Diller and Scofidio deliberately inhabit the margins of architec- ture. Their projects range from gallery exhibitions and installa- tions, stage design and body con- structions to built work. Their influences and inierests include Marcel Duchamp, an- drogeny, medical devices and Probes, bodybuilding, John Cage, commercials, performance art, robotics, neo-Dada, hygiene, guerilla art, and John Hejduk. In their work, design becomes social commentary. The body is perhaps the central theme of their work and it enters as content, site and situation. Diller and Scofidio first became known for their theatre designs and installations, including the Rotary Notary and His Hot Plate (inspired by Duchamp’s Large Glass, or The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors) (1987), which included a chastity belt body con- struction; The American Mysteries (1984); and ‘Bridge — the Mem- ory Theatre of Giulio Camillo” (1986). Other recent projects include: Para/-site, an installation at the Museum of Modern Art (1989); Big fires start small “IT STARTED out as a small fire. I was too embar- rassed to call the fire department. HOT TIPS North Vancouver District Fire Department Each year many fires that start out small end up causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in dam- ages because someone was afraid or too embarrassed to call the fire department. During the early stages of a fire, your actions play a crucial role in the safety of your family and the amount of damage that occurs. Upon discovering a fire, you should sound an alarm to let the other people in the area know that there is the potential for danger and that they should evacuate. Call the fire department even if the fire is small; for every minute a fire burns it doubles in size! Small fires can grow quickly. Only after the first two steps have been completed should you try to extinguish small fires. The Distrist of North Van- couver Fire Department is here io help you. Don’t be afraid to call if we can help in any way, because in a fire, seconds count.
