The West Vancouver resident oversees the operations of the rail company, which offers scenic rail tours from Vancouver, through the Canadian Rockies and into Banff and Calgary. And Armstrong and his crew should be proud of the success they have achieved in the short time the company’s Rocky Moun- taineer train has been in opera- tion. Last year the International Railway Traveler, a magazine based in Louisville, Kentucky, and aimed at railway enthusiasts and industry tour operators, named the Rocky Mountaineer as one of the best sightseeing trips in the world and the best in Canada. The company’s two trips, which this year will operate from May 24 Vancouver to Banff and Calgary. Both trips stop overnight in Kamloops. The service was originally operated by Via Rail, but Arm- strong, along with other partners, took over the train excursion from the federal government when Ot- tawa decided to cut 50% of Via’s passenger service. The federal government orginal- ly received over 20 private-sector applications for the right to operate the Rocky Mountaineer; Armstrong’s group wa: awarded the operation. The company began its opera- tions in Vancouver, but moved to North Vancouver, across from the Park and Tilford Shopping Cen- tre, last March.
