VANCOUVER, B.C. is my favorite city in North America ... perhaps the world. { have sampled many. Stockholm, Sweden, is a favorite. Geneva, Switzerland; another. Cities, like countries and peo- ple, have charts. The horoscope for our fair city, has Sun in Aries conjunct a retrograde Mercury, attesting to the city’s love for ac- tivity, Mars, the ‘‘ruler,"’ is in Virgo, emphasizing the importance of agriculture and forestry. The Virgo attribute also gives our city an aura of cleanliness and order, an aura that to some tends toward sterility. Especially com- pared to some U.S. municipalities, we are remarkably efficient and well-groomed. The chart overall has very few strong aspects. This leaves our city without a firm sense of direction, especially since Aries on its own leans towards action for action’s sake, rather than action for a well-defined end. Considering that both Mercury and Mars, not to mention Uranus and Jupiter as well, are retrograde further hampers Vancouver in set- ling a coherent course for itself. The result is a city whose geog- raphy and climate give it enor- mous potential for world status, but whose character holds it back from realizing greatness. An opposition from Venus in Pisces to Mars in Virgo sets up a conflict between beauty and gen- tility on one hand and industri- ousness and pragmatism on the other. We cannot make up our minds whether to become grand or to remain humbie. As an indication of striving towards the former, our West End has grown into a mini-Manhattan, with dozens of highrise apartment buildings appearing where single- family homes used to stand. Expo °86 and the light rail transit system also reflect this side of our city. With regard to the latter, Van- couver retains its focus on parks, gardens, and other open spaces. Nearly half of the waterfront, which is extensive since we occupy a peninsula, is given over to parklands, and Stanley Park is greater in size than downtown, Chinatown, and the West End combined.
