That's the call the West Van-
couver SPCA is sending out to the
North Shore community after it
discovered i2 cats left to fend for
themselves in a West Vancouver
home.

“Tt was quite a horrific situa-
tion. One had to be put down,”
says Marsha Nixon, director and
spokesman for the local SPCA
branch,

According to Nixon, the cats
were deserted when the homeown-
er, an elderly lady, was hospital-
ized. Four of the cats had holed
up in a wall and it took a few
days to capture the renegades.

The remaining 11 cats are
healthy adults, but Nixon fears
that the West Vancouver SPCA,
which usually houses 30 cats at
any given time, is well past its ca-
pacity now with 50 adult cats. As
well, three cats are expecting — or
have already produced — fitters.

But it's the adult cats that are
harder to find a home for, Nixon
says.

“We are wanting at all costs to
avoid putting them down,"’ she
says. ‘‘We would like to give these
cais achanee.”? |

The SPCA will pay for the
spaying or neutering of any of the
cats that still need the operations
and will also provide a
veterinarian certificate which
enables the cat owner to send the
initial check-up bill io the SPCA.
; The local branch will make a
ao follow-up call to the new pet
owner and will take the cat back
if the owner is unsatisfied.

According to a West Vancouver
District bylaw, each household is
restricted to six adult cats.
