leased to District 44

THE COVE Cliff school site still belongs to the
District of North Vancouver, but School District 44
will now lease it for the nominal sum of one dollar a

year.

District council voted unanimously at Monday
night’s Policy and Planning meeting to agree to the
lease arrangement for as long as the land is required
for school purposes.

The arrangement was made as a result of the school
board’s abandonment of the Burrard View Com-
munity School site, which is also owned by the
district. Legal ownership of that site has always re-

been able to discover the historical reason for the
anomaly.

Council agreed to the proposed lease arrangement
in order not to further delay the new school’s progress
at the Cove Cliff site, but fumed privately at the pro-
vince ‘‘short-changing’’ school funding because the
land is in municipal ownership.

“That land represents equity that can be, and is,
applied to other capital expenditures such as parks
and recreation facilities,*’ said Mayor Marilyn Baker
in a memo to council.
