The Lumina is designed to ap-
peal to a broad range of custom-
ers. Chevrolet management expect
the Lumina to account for a
substantial portion of total
Chevrolet model sales by 1991.

_ Available initially as a six pas-
senger four-door model, it will be
joined later in the 1990 modci year
by a sporty two-door coupe and an
innovative front-wheel-drive
multi-purpose vehicle, the Lumina
APV, designed to appeal to both
station wagon and mini-van
owners.

Lumina coupe and sedan models
will be available in base and Euro
models, while the Lumina APV
will be available in base and up-
level ““CL’’ models. The Lumina
APV will also be available as a
cargo van and has a unique truck
chassis.

GM management is confident
that Lumina will be a winner. For
starters, the Chevrolet Lumina is
the largest front-wheel-drive car
ever built for Chevrolet. It is 25
centimetres (10 inches) longer than
the Chevrolet Celebrity or its
primary competitor, the Ford
Taurus.

It also bears a family
resemblance to another Chevrolet
model which is currently setting

marketing manager. ‘The Lumina
maintains a distinctive look unique
to the mid-sized market.’’

The Chevroiet Lumina coupe
and sedan will be offered with a
variety of powerteam choices. Base
engine on the Lumina will be the
2.5 litre four cylinder engine.

This engine has been a proven
powerplant in many GM _ front-
wheel-drive vehicles for the past
ten years.

“The engine’s proven reliability
and durability should + well ac-
cepted in this vehicle,’’ according
to Dick Conlin, GM of Canada’s
director of marketing. ‘‘The 1990
version of the 2.5 litre engine
features many improvements over
the last several years, such as
balance shafts and electronic fuel
injection.

‘With a horsepower rating of
112, the Lumina base level engine
has more horsepower ihan the
Ford Taurus 2.5 litre engine (90
horsepower) or the Chrysler Dy-
nasty 2.5 litre engine (100 horse-
power). Its blend of power and
fuel economy should be well
received by the Canadian public.”’

In addition, the Lumina will
have an available 3.1 litre V6
engine with multi-port fuel injec-
tion, a much refined and higher

displacement version of GM’s
proven 2.8 litre V6 engine. This
quick 3.1 litre V6 engine will be
available with both a three-speed
automatic or four-speed automatic
transmission. Not only is the
Lumina built in Canada, Lumina’s
3.1 V6 litre engine comes from GM
of Canada’s St. Catharines engine
plant.

Towards that goal of building
one of the highest quality vehicles
anywhere in the world, General
Motors took a clean sheet ap-
proach to all facets of Lumina
design and production. According

Canada's director for manufactur-
ing, planning and engineering, the
Lumina differs dramatically from
other North American cars.

“We wanted to have a car witha
wide customer appeal. The Lumina
has gone through hundreds of cus-
tomer clinics to identify the
features that customers require in a
mid-size car.

“Traditionally, North American
vehicles were designed to give cus-
tomers a maximum of choice. It
was theoretically possible to build
many billions of combinations of
the same vehicle, each one slightly
different, even without considering

color and trim as combinations
Obviously the vast majority 0!
these combinations were’ never us-
ed. The impact on both cost anc
quality was enormous.

‘‘We wanted a car that would be
simpler to build, with-a muct
higher level of quality. That goai
was achieved by starting with a
substantially higher level of stand-
ard equipment and adding only a
limited number of options avail-
able independently or in groups.”
