By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter Opened in November, the new Hollyburn House seniors facility is right at home on the corner of Marine Drive and 21st Street in ritzy West Vancouver. The place, which came in at a cost close of $10 million, drips in polished brass and is finished in- side with light oak woodwork and a jade green and peach color scheme. The building was designed by Vancouver-based Neale Staniszkis Doll Architects and developed by British company Laing Property Corp. Hollyburn House is the first senior home built in Canada by Laing, which specializes in senior homes and shopping centres in Britain. A portion of the facility is des- ignaied as a care centre, offering intermediate care for short-term or ongoing assistance. The care centre is also used as a convalescence space and may be used by in-home caregivers looking for a holiday from their duties. The balance of Hollyburn House is dedicated to independent living apartments. All suites are sup- ported by 24-hour nursing staff. Support services include daily maid service, utilities, cablevision, three meals per day in the Care Centre dining room, laundry ser- vice, planned program activities, a social coordinator, a beauty parlor, a convenience shop, a health clinic for physiotherapy, lounges, activity room and sched- uled mini-bus transportation. Hollyburn House administrator Carol Omstead says the seniors fa- cility is attracting the best of West Van's aging community. ‘‘Most of the top West Vancouver families are represented here. The well- | known families are becoming in- volved,’’ Omstead said. Omstead maintains a big draw- ing card, in addition to the opu- lence oozing from the walls, is the facility focus of supporting in- dependence, rather than imposing things on residents. ‘'We've got a residents council for input into life at Hollyburn House and they act as an advisory group,’ Omstead said. Twenty residents currently use the 36-unit care centre, while the apartments, running from bacheior to two-bedroom suites, are 60 per cent occupied. Monthly room prices average $2,000. The Scots and Scottish at heart took over the place Monday at the first annual Robbie Burns Lunch. The haggis was butchered in style with bagpipes and the traditional Burns Address to the Haggis rounding out the luncheon. For more information about the new facility call 688-3611.
