8 - Friday, May 15, 1987 - North Shore News Mailbox District more than fair on suites Dear Editor: Recent North Shore News editorials concerning the illegal suites issue in the District of North Vancouver do not, in our opinion, reflect a fair treatment to the ma- jority of district homeowners. The impact of two family units in single-family zoned areas has been detrimental to the lifestyle and investment of the law-abiding homeowner. While agreeing that tenants are not criminals, they may at the same time be victims of prof- iteering by owners — particularly the non-resident investor. So what has council done that is so unfair? Council's action reflects com- passion and consideration for the tenants and landlords, and further, will result in a legal status which protects them. The reasonable sunset period allows landlords to declare themselves, provides for proper in- spection of facilities, and for fi- nancial contribution to community services. An_ initial registration period would provide incentive for Jandlecds to legalize their land use and will prevent vendettas. The council action also provides legal long-term in-law accommodation for present buildings. If anybody is suffering by the council action, it is the law-abiding single-family zoned homeowner who will riot be able to enjoy the same financial benefits as his landlord neighbor or the investor owner who has Magrantly violated the zoning bylaws, knowingly or otherwise. Your paper, through its editorial staff, should be fair, responsible, and constructive. The task force ‘VITAL MESSAGE’ News support helps traffic safety Dear Editor: A tip of the hat to the News — and a small correc- tion. Thanks to Booze Who, editorials, news reports and columnists such as Bob Hunter, News readers are regularly informed about traffic safety problems and the community programs underway to reduce highway injuries and deaths. Most recently, a News report highlighting the fact that an infant car seat saved a baby from almost cer- tain death in a Lions Gate Bridge crash, brought home a vital message for all parents. However, in coverage of my CounterAttack pres- entation to North Vercouver District Council the News reported that the corporation pays out close to $3 million in claims every working day. The precise amount is $2.5 million every working day — a figure which we hope may one day be reduced through traf= fic safety initiatives and the kind of media support, demonstrated by the North Shore News. District council has displayed fortitude in tackling this complex subject and in instructing staff to prepare the necessary bylaws and regulations to reflect its decision. Now is the time for community and editorial support, unless you wish the district to become an in- vestors/renters community rather than a homeowner community. jay The concept of ‘ta man's home is his castle’’ is not relevant whet it concerns his violation of land use and the imposition of his values on his neighbors. Although some of the communi- ty may not agree with the council's deciared action, from both sides of the question our association execu- tive commends council for taking action within its timetable, and for taking an action which is fair to the community at large.
