7 Doug Collins @ get this straight © ae . OTTAWA'S CRAZY plan to wipe out tobacco advertising : is yet another example of government-by-pressure-group. If it isn’t the churches, which want the country stuffed with ; “refugees’’, it's the Official 4 Women Industry, which believes that ladies should become hairy- chested loggers. And if it isn’t the Official Women Industry, it’s the Human Rights Industry, which is dedicated to the elimination of bum-patting. High on the fist of strange cabals, naturally, is the Anti- Smoking Industry, which includes groups like the Friends and Relatives of Dead and Lying : wn Smokers. Lys All of these lunatics are skilled a in poking their sniffers into other people’s business. (Sniff-sniff! Whar do we have here?) One wonders how mankind could possibly have survived into the Twentieth Century without their protective influence. As it is, though, they'll probably finish us off, tn their brave new world, life won't be worth fiving. ‘ oo Mind you, as a non-smoker | do yp not lie awake at night werryng Ly : about the fate of the weed-lovers. . But f fear that once the smokers ’ have been chased off the planet, the Anti-Smoking Industry will be looking for other things to do and f will turn its eager eye on things j like star-gazing, pets, and booze. They will be putting the old | watering-hole off limits, snat- ching the Glenfidditch from a guy’s lips, and telling us that all we can have for breakfast is white of egg, whole wheat bread, and a little home-made marmaladé, As far as tobacco advertising is concerned, there is no proof that it creates smokers. Pot-smoking has thrived, for instance, with no advertising at all. What tobacco j advertising does is to create com- petition for various brands in the available market. | My solution to our woes is to dump government-by-pressure- group and replace it with government-by-referendum. x *& Mr. Michael Hewett of North Vancouver has sent me a Deciara- tion On Smoking. Here it is: a “For some-time now I have 24 been concerned about, smokers. a. Admittedly, we have made limited WV council WEST VANCOUVER District councilmen gave up their seats Monday to the up-and-coming generation of politicians — repre- sented by students from West Vancouver, Hillside and Sentinel Secondary schools — as part of Local Government Awareness Week. The students took over from Mayor Don Lanskail and other members of council to hold their own junior counci) meeting. — Among the weighty and impor- tant issues debated by the junior council members were whether the driving age should be raised from 16 to 18, whether a teen disco ap- plication should be approved, and whether skateboards should be allowed on district roads and sidewalks. ; “ Acting junior ald. J. Moss said 4 she was steadfastly against a reso- lution to raise the driving age to Progress in segregating them from respectable citizens. Much re- mains to be done, however. “Often, smokers will approach someone without showing any sign of what they are. The unwary citizen may, unknowingly, invite one of them into his home,’ thereby facing the severe dangers inherent in such contact. The | general public must be protected from such risks. “1 believe that all smokers should be compelled by Jaw to wear a sign that will provide a warning to non-smokers, A sym- bol, such as a star with a cigarette depicted on it, would be ap- propriate. It could be worn on the sleeve, and failure to wear it would be punishable by an ex- tended . prison sentence in a segregated prison. “Although segregated prisons are a very reasonable idea, 1 would like to make it clear that 1 am not one of those. extremists who think that smokers should be compelled to live in segregated -housing. ! think that the moderate course of the warning sign would be enough to discourage contact between smokers and the public at large. “Unfortunately, our present government is too weak to take more than token action. To resolve this problem, | am form- ing anew party designed to follow my recommendations. ] would ap- preciate hearing from all who wish to join me in this worthwhile venture. “T should like to point out that our platform would include many other desirable aims. { have in mind here the immediate im- | prisonment of all white South Africans in Canada, and the ban- ning of any 7roup that opposes the public gooa. | am thinking of groups like the nuclear power lob- by, the anti-immigrant extremists, and the supvorters of of seal hun- | ting, together. with any other groups that may oppose the policies of my government.”’ The Declaration On Smoking may sound a little odd right now. But | think we could get used to what it proposes. We have already got used to a lot. Senior students replace members 18. ‘Frankly, I read this and I was appalled,’’ said Moss. ‘‘Speaking from a teenage point of view, next year I want to learn to drive and if can’t, I’m going to feel angry and cheated and I’m sure a lot of other people would share the same view.”’ Students also debated the merits of beach fires on Ambleside beach. There was much discussion about whether late night fires on the beach led to more drinking and unruly behavior by youngsters. Junior mayor C. Hawes and junior aldermen M. Scbol, N. Af- shar, S. Bard, C. Brayshaw, H. Sheridan, C. Naylor, J. Gibbs and Moss presided over the meeting. At the end of the 1%-hour meeting, Mayor Lanskail con- gratulated the junior aldermen for being fair and. well-balanced in their debate and also for injecting some humor into their discussions. == City approves task force funds NORTH VANCOUVER City Council approved Monday the spending of up to $5,000 to pay for a consultant to assist the North Shore Economic Development Advisory Task Force. But one alderman bristled at the move, which comes less than five months after council rejected a similar $5,000 grant to the group to help it in formulating a com- prehensive economic development plan for the whole of the North Shore, Ald. Ralph Hall, who has been opposed to hiring the consultants, suggested a loophole had been found that made it casier to get approval for the proposal. The earlier grant request needed five affirmative votes for approval; the move to fund the task force consultant needed only a majority i | : DOWNTOWN 685-128 #316-1030-W-GEORGIA THE POWER OF P N.AN. 988-4042 4643 LONSDALE MASTER GARDENER PLANT CLINIC Come for Free Plant Advice SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MAY 17 _ Sale prices effective to May 20/57 9 - Wednesday, May 13, 1987 - North Shore News whatever you call it,’ Hall told council, vote for approval. “f don't agree with this grant or This Week’s Special | New Zealand 80°/100 gr.
