paints to express her thrill of see-
ing and to make the viewer aware
of things that they themselves had
not noticed.

Although photography had been
an earlier love, Johnson is not a
photographic painter. Her fand-
scapes are not as the unselective
eye of the camera sees them — she
selects, emphasizes, simplifies and
seeks to give impression.

Her show at the North. Van-
couver provincia) courthouse con-
sists of 25 works developed from
images of her extensive travels. She

career as a mathematics teacher,
and graduated from studio arts at
Capilano College and from Emily
Carr College of Art and Design.

While her favorite medium is
watercolor, works in the show in-
clude ink, lino cuts, and oil over
acrylic.

The show is sponsored by the
North Vancouver Community Arts
Council and runs until April 29.
Viewing hours are from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

WV footpath information sought

THE LACK of a detailed map for footpaths has
spurred a West Vancouver resident into action.

Jane Fawkes has initiated a survey of neighborhood
trails and pedestrian access routes in West Vancouver
to help draw a map. ;

“West Van is full of funny fittle parks and access
routes to nice little beaches,’’ Fawkes said.

She said often those paths are unmarked because

’- vandals take down the signs. She also accused home-

owners of trying to obscure beach accesses to increase
their privacy. —. . ; ;
' . Fawkes said_many.trails that appear private are in

fact public footpaths. ‘‘There are a lot of people
walking around and many people don’t know these
trails exist,’” she said. : ;

The West Vancouver Parks and Recreation board
has given cooperation for the project, but the finan-
cial aspect has not been discussed :et.

Fawkes said she is particularly interested in foot-
paths in residential neighborhoods that are shortcuts
or beach access routes. .

She said adequate maps of hiking trails and bicycle
routes exist for North Vancouver.
