Meanwhile, I’ve been prowling around England too, to a part I’ve never visited. For some reason, tourism to East Anglia isn’t as ma- jor an industry as in some other parts of Britain. Personatly, I'd like to see it that way — it’s wonderful to go there and not be mobbed by fellow tourists. But it’s a lovely part of the country and well worth a visit. Our first stop was the city of Norwich, just a little over two hours by train from London. (Catch the train at the Liverpool St. station). Instead of my usual bed-and- breakfast accommodation, this was a tour so luxury accommoda- tion was the norm. ° travel. by Barbara _McCreadie.. ‘If you'can afford it, the Hotel Nelson is one of the nicest modern hotels I’ve encountered. It’s cen- tral — right across the parking lot from the station and a short walk |": to most of. Norwich's attractions. . BUBBLE FUN : ‘This hotel room had one. feature I’ve never encountered before. The ~ bathtub bottom was covered with ‘tiny holes, and when you-pulled a switch you found yourself prac- tically bubbled away. The devil made me do it! -The hotel provided packets of bubble bath and I dumped one in. The best first-stop for a visitor is the Tourist Office for a great selection of maps and pamphlets to guide you about. The day I was there they were just packing up.to move to the Guildhall, near the castle and right beside the open-air market. Many of the guides offered are for walking tours of the city. What are your special interests? Silver? Norwich was once one of Britain’s finest silver centres and one of the guides leads you on the trail of historic pieces. Another caught my attention — ‘‘Macabre Trail of Norwich’”’ and I wished I'd had the time to follow the trail of some ghosts and goblins. PUB CRAWL Pubs are always a popular choice for less than enthusiastic L.41.50 single, L.52 double, in- walkers. There’s a guide to these too —- don't miss the Adam and Eve which dates back to the 1200s when it was the watering hole for the builders of the Cathedral. Did you know that choir boys were into graffiti even back in the 1700s? Two of Britain's most famous seamen — Lord Nelson and Cap- tain Vancouver -- worshipped here and attended the Cathedral School. I must admit that poor old Van- couver rates second to Nelson in popularity. In fact, if it wasn't for our Vancouver getting so excited about him what with Centennial and all, I think it might be *‘Cap- tain Who?” As you chug along on the train to Norwich you may' see fields covered in yellow blossoms.
